WHAT’S IN A NAME?

...As I grew up I realised how ‘unspecial’ my name was; almost every third house had an Olusegun, so we took to labeling them as Segun-oke (the Segun who lives up the road), Segun-isale (the Segun who lives down the lane), Segun-church (the Segun who works at the church), Segun Eleja (the Segun who sells fish or whose mother sells fish).

I am primarily human and, at that basic level, we are all the same. Life and the earth are our common inheritance. I do not know where I come from, and neither do I know, for a fact, where I will go when I die. I do know that there is a lot of evil in the world that needs to be counterbalanced by good intentions and acts.

Sometimes we look at our parents and ancestors and blame them for what we are today or for the struggles we have had to face. It is important to take what we consider the good and bad as an advantage. We should see their errors, and the pain and loss it caused them, as a sacrifice they made so that those of us coming after them would be able to avoid similar pitfalls.

Me and My Many Women

I have heard many rumours about how much of a ladies’ man I am. In actual fact, a young journalist told me a couple of years back that she’d heard that I had fathered about 7 children with as many different women on as many continents (the intrepid world traveller that I am, eh?). That was news to me – I thought media folks were in the business of telling the news, not making it up! Well, they do seem to make up a lot of the news you see on TV these days…
